CIL is pleased to continue the dialogue on progressive (or even revolutionary) Christian thought in the spirit of earlier lecturers like Jim Wallis, Bishop Spong, Dr. Marcus Borg and others. McLaren is a close associate of and in a similar mold as Jim Wallis, and has been noted by philosopher-mystic Ken Wilber for his progressive thought and actions.
Everything Must Change.....
Status-quo Christianity has traded the revolutionary story of Jesus for familiar clichés, pat answers, and domesticated programs. Not just Christianity, but the world’s religions have failed to give us a framework of values, vision, inspiration, and spiritual growth capable of reducing and healing the entangled and related global crises of:
- Environmental breakdown caused by greed and ego leading to our unsustainable global economy, no matter its ability to produce great wealth for about one-third of us.
- Growing gap between ultra-rich and extremely poor.
- Danger of cataclysmic war from intensifying resentment among groups with different beliefs and economic status.
All religions must become more open and progressive, but Brian’s focus is on transformation of Christianity based on the radical example and teachings of Jesus, most of which has been drained of the of its true spirit.
In this lecture/workshop McLaren will flesh out the nature and gripping depth of our global crises and then show that hope is available from a return to what Jesus really meant: love, compassion, justice, and wisdom directed to ourselves and all life.
The event will be based on McLaren’s latest book, Everything Must Change: Jesus, Global Crises, and a Revolution of Hope. Reading this book ahead of time would be useful. This and others of his books will be on sale and he will be available for signing.
Added Election Week Feature: This event comes at the end of an important national election. Brian has agreed to talk about his views on the election, whatever the outcome, hopefully known by then: what does the outcome mean and what should progressive Christians, actually all thoughtful people, do to promote solution to our crises in this new context?
Brian McLaren is an author (16 books), speaker, pastor, and networker among innovative church leaders, thinkers, and activists. He is a deep scholar who looks at the biblical message in light of modern and postmodern culture and ideas. He is quickly gaining recognition as a guest on television, radio, and other news media. Time magazine listed him as one of America's 25 most influential evangelicals. "Evangelical” here is redefined in many ways from the stereotypical understanding. His first book, The Church on the Other Side, has been recognized as a primary portal into current conversation about postmodern ministry. A Generous Orthodoxy, published in 2004 is a personal confession and has been called a "manifesto" of the emerging church conversation. Brian has been a successful church founder but now spends his time in study, writing, lecturing, and as a member and leader in many groups working toward reformed orthodoxy, justice, reduced poverty, and care of our planet.
