The ability to quiet one’s mind and to be able to focus one’s energy at will on any particular task provides timeless, true self-empowerment by anyone’s standard, but it is also the key to beginning to unlock the experience of inner peace we all find so evasive in our lives today. This information and experience has come together in his book, which Sterner has aptly titled “The Practicing Mind“.
Put your mind on a thought diet. Join Thomas M. Sterner author of the “The Practicing Mind” and the book’s editor Lin McDowell of Mountain Sage Publishing in a compelling discussion about the concepts discussed in his best selling book. Learn to do more, think less and enjoy the journey as you move toward accomplishing all of your goals.
The morning session will consist of a lecture/Power Point presentation discussing topics such as learning to stay “present” in all activities, the myth of “perfection” being some place other than where we are right now, and how to achieve more in your life with less effort through “process” rather than “product” orientation which is constantly forced on us through out our day. You will learn why most of us are rarely in the present moment, how to recognize when you have fallen out of the present and simple tools to make living in the present your natural state of being throughout you day. Materials will be provided to the participants.
Tom Sterner For twenty five years Thomas M Sterner served as the sole concert piano technician for The Grand Opera House in Wilmington, Delaware, a nationally-known performance venue. During that time he met and performed work for many of the most prestigious musicians and conductors the world has to offer. His clients spanned all genres of the music industry, from pop to country to jazz and classical. He received accolades from many performers, some even stopping their show to publicly acknowledge his fine work. At the same time , he also operated a highly successful piano remanufacturing facility where he painstakingly restored vintage grand pianos for the most discerning customers. The daily discipline required for his vocation, combined with his interest and study of both eastern thought and modern performance enhancement psychologies, were the forces that have inspired him to succeed in so many disciplines. An accomplished musician/composer, a private pilot, avid golfer and student of archery to name a few, Mr. Sterner finds joy in the process of learning to overcome life’s struggles by understanding the source of inner strength, peace, and self discipline, and the value of staying in the present moment. Inspired by all that he has learned, Thomas M Sterner sold his highly successful service business in 2005, created Mountain Sage Publishing and wrote his top-selling book, “The Practicing Mind: Bringing Discipline and Focus Into Your Life ”.
The afternoon session will discuss what meditation is, the main types that are practiced and how meditation of any kind can both accelerate your ability to focus your mind at will and give you the ability to shut down unwanted negative emotional responses to various thought content. Both morning and afternoon sessions will be interactive so the participants can share experiences that can enhance everyone’s understanding of these universal truths.
The Power Of Stillness
Exploring “The Practicing Mind”
By Thomas M Sterner
The Chinese symbols found on the book’s cover are interpreted as a mind that is still and quiet, a mind that is empty of unwanted and unnecessary thoughts. A mind in this state is disciplined and totally focused like the light waves in a laser beam. This mind is owned by its master who can direct its extraordinary energy into whatever endeavor he or she desires, be that something as casual as improving a golf swing, focusing on a project at work, or staying on a diet; to a more emotionally-infused situation such as dealing with a difficult child or co-worker. The productivity of such a mind is hard to comprehend when compared to the average scattered and ever-babbling mind most of us live with.
In our culture today, such a quiet mind is completely foreign. Our minds are in a constant state of over-stimulation, a state of hyper-thought. This comes in part from the ever increasing need to multi-task as a means of getting through the day. Though multi-tasking in itself is not bad, it becomes a problem when it is the only manner in which we function; and when done incorrectly, it creates a very agitated and exhausted mental and physical state. For the most part, people are totally unaware that they operate in this manner until either someone or some circumstance requires them to focus on just one thing, one process or one moment at a time. Then they experience how out-of-control their thinking process really is.
